What a year. 2013 has been amazing for so many reasons. It has been difficult at times but I have achieved so much.
Starting in January following Don Fink’s Ironfit 30 week plan but without an Ironman to enter until the Outlaw put more places on the market. Step forward my great Mum who helped me out with the best 30th birthday present ever! Training hard across all 3 disciplines, my first race was the regional XC championships where I came second by a second after sportingly helping the first place finisher not get lost. This was followed up by a top ten finish at the Royal Navy XC Championships in February and subsequent selection for the Inter Services XC Championships. A rite of passage in bringing up the rear was my reward but it was so inspiring to run with better athletes and see what is available.
March was when the real fireworks started as I came 13th in the Stafford Half Marathon which is a fast half marathon perfectly timed for London. I smashed my previous PB of 1:29:59 with a 1:18:26 and sub 6:00m/m. Quite an achievement. The next week, I came second in the Royal Navy Duathlon Championships winning some energy powder and a bottle of vino collapso.
After getting lucky in the London Marathon ballot, London was my ‘A’ race in the build up to the Outlaw and I went sub 3 at my first attempt in 2:55:59 and 4th over the line for the Royal Navy. Whilst not well paced it got the job done as was quite a nice result off 28mpw for the 14 weeks before.
Resting and building I did a friendly DIY half Ironman around Portsmouth with Portsmouth Triathletes. Whilst personal circumstances have meant I have been unable to enjoy the Saturday morning dips in the Solent as often as I would have liked, I would recommend them to anyone looking for a friendly local tri club.
I was suffering from some niggles and logged very little mileage from April to July. I can now put these niggles down to wearing old shoes which means I now log shoe miles on Strava.
The Outlaw was an excellent experience. My first Ironman. A hot day but a great event made even better
